I didn’t feel confident about putting London-based band, I Am Giant into The Countdown, due to their dubious allegiance to the NZ Music scene, however, we still like to think of them as ours since they are 3:1 Kiwi:Brit (and they have played at Homegrown outings). Its members hale from such epic bands as Blindspott and Tadpole (see previous Kiwi Classic).
The second single from Christchurch-based band, Opshop.
I was hooked from their first single. I lost a little momentum when they became more commercially popular, but they have regained some of their rock edge since then. I recall going to a Feelers/Opshop concert (Opshop were supporting the more popular Feelers). I was there to see Opshop. As much as I like the Feelers as well, this was when Opshop were new and I loved their two singles at the time - “Nothing Can Wait” and “Secrets”. I managed to grab a song list from the side of the stage at the end of their set and got four autographs that night. The next time I saw them I got all five (I credit my flashing pen), and started a trend of song-list grabbing.
Check out this wonderful video showcasing this month’s entries into The Countdown. It opens with July’s winner - Switzerland (a song I considered voting for, but it got on my nerves just a little).
Wow, my time has started to get really busy, and this blog is suffering for it. I do apologize. In an effort to catch you up a little, here is how I voted in July:
1 point went to: Supergene - Russian Doll - UK, which doesn’t appear to have a video on Youtube at this time… fabulous.
2 points went to: Continental - En el camino - Costa Rica
Supergroove were well ahead of their time, recording a wonderful selection of ageless cross-genre music. This is the video they made when they released this song in Australia.
First up, here is the song to represent NZ for the month of July:
A rather nice little poppy number, featuring the vocals of Ladyhawke. I do like her voice.
For the month of June, NZ was represented by Black River Drive with their song “Bullet For Your Gun”, and we came 14th out of 59. Not too shabby. continue reading…
